An American Airlines Jet made an emergency landing today after circling over North Texas for over 2 hours. American Airlines flight 1654 left Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport headed for Baltimore around 5:00 PM today. Shortly after takeoff one of the tires aboard the McDonnell Douglas MD-80 aircraft blew and the captain declared an emergency. The aircraft was told to circle the airport to try to burn fuel in an effort to try to bring the aircraft safely to the ground.

After circling the North Texan skies for 2 hours the aircraft finally landed right before 7:00 PM. The passengers were taken to gate C4 where they safely left the aircraft. A passenger told NBC 5's Bianca Castro that the passengers will be put on another aircraft to Baltimore/Washington airport.

Was it an emergency landing?
I wonder if this could be the end of the MDs for AA.

AA is planning to phase out like half of their MD-80's by the end of this year as their new Boeing 737-800's roll in. I think they are supposed to be completely out by 2016 or 2018 and replaced by the Boeing 737's

and yes it was an emergency landing
How can a tyre blow after take-off?
Don't know that's what NBC 5 said
It probably happened at the end of the take-off run (after V1) so they couldn't abort the take-off
Yeah that's probably it. I mean the likelihood of it being some type of pressure issue isn't likely
Oh so the FAA has realeased new info:
It was a landing gear issue
If a tire blows, is it safe to retract the gear or is it a fire hazard?

I guess it depends on how long the metal wheel is contacting the runway. It would probably heat up fast.
