Virgin Atlantic Airways have announced that their regional sector of the airline will close next year. The 'Little Red' service was started in March 2013 with four Airbus A320s wet-leased from Irish flag-carrier Aer Lingus. The key aim of the regional services (from Edinburgh, Manchester and Aberdeen to London) was to enable passengers to transit easily from their home airport, to London Heathrow and onto any other Virgin Atlantic destinations worldwide. However, the services have not been used for these reasons with Virgin saying that the majority of it's passengers are using it as a stand-alone service. The average passenger load of a Little Red service was reported at around 37%.

Sir Richard Branson, president of Virgin Group, said: "The team did their absolute best to make a go of it and I thank them all for their amazing efforts. In the meantime, keep flying on Little Red where you'll continue to get amazing offers and great service." Flights will stop in 2015; Manchester flights will end on the 28th March while the Aberdeen and Edinburgh flights will stop on the 26th September 2015.
