I mean like if you take away one seat, how much more cargo space do you have.

Well you're realy piling the pressure on here, i'll see what I can do. Obviously though this will depend on the capacity of a plane as an A380 with 800 seats will be able to fit less cargo per seat then an A380 with 550 seats.

Heres what I have come up with for the A380, obviously if no one can think of a better way to calculate this then more aircraft could be done and an average taken.

1. Average cabin length (upper cabin+lower cabin/2) - skip this if aircraft only has one cabin. For the A380 this is 47.415m (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airbus_A380#Specifications)

2. Take an average of the hight and width of the cabin - for the A380 this is 7.775M

3. Using the equation of π r^2 h then an approximate cabin volume can be calculated. Substituting for the A380 we get the equation of V = π*((7.775/2)^2)*47.415, this is equal to 2,251.160354096.

4. To get a value per seats then that number needs to be divided by the amount of seats on that aircraft. For an A380 in maximum capacity this is 853. Giving an A380 with 853 seats an approximate cargo carrying capacity of 2.6391094421 m^3.

How does this way of working it out look to people?

And lastly DBD, depending on what data can be found would it be possible for a different aircraft to have a different amount of cargo space. I'm thinking where a database contains the number calculated in step 3 and then the website calculates the amount per seat in order to account for different seating configurations on different airlines - could this be done?

Yes, I agree. The database will store the average cabin length for each aircraft, and then the formula would be stored as a function/class method. The website could have that feature, and it is sort of what I envisioned.
