British Airways; LHR-JFK Return. October/November 2013

Flight Numbers: BA0173 (LHR-JFK), BA0112 (JFK-LHR)

Class: World Traveller (Economy) - both ways

I went to New York back in late October/ early November last year. The outbound flight to JFK was much better than the return. This was mainly due to the 777 having British Airways' new cabin fitted and the 747 not. In-flight entertainment on both flights was very good (a bit better on the 777 though) and so was the cabin service. All the BA staff both in-flight and on the ground were extremely nice and helpful.

Our departure from Heathrow was slightly delayed due to an American Airlines flight having a minor bird-strike on departure (this pushed our departure back about 10 minutes) Total flight time to New York was about 7.5 hours or something like that Wink Once we landed, it took us no time at all to get to the gate (considering we landed at around 17:50 local time). Unloading of the aircraft was quick and easy but the bags took quite a long time to come off (especially annoying when one of your three bags is the first to come off and the others were both the last few to come off)

Now the return flight. We got to JFK nice and early which was lucky as the terminal was packed to the rafters with passengers. They had TVs on in the check-in areas showing the news that day. This was very unfortunate because the main news story was that Los Angeles airport shooting. They probably would've been better to not show that sort of news in the check-in area of a major international airport. Anyway, security at JFK was rather quick and then I had a spare $30 to spend in departures Tongue. We boarded our flight easily in good time. This Boeing 747-400 had not yet been fitted with BAs new cabin so it was not that good to be honest. The IFE was old, the seats were a bit passed it and the leg room was a good few inches less than that of the 777 - So little that I never managed to sleep on the flight (especially bad when you take into account the 12 hours I'd already been awake that day and the 3 hour train journey home when I landed) Back on the flight, the food was good and so was the service. We managed to arrive over London about 15 minutes before the airport opened so had to circle a bit. The landing was very good and we went straight to our gate (we were about 2nd to land that day Big Grin) Baggage claim was a bit slow again but everything else went well.
