The point is, no Chinese nor Taiwanese person that I know considers Taiwan to be Chinese. All polls on the subject have shown that pretty much everyone calls themselves Taiwanese (with the exception of die-hard Communists.) This is because Taiwan has never been formally acknowledged as Chinese (even by Mao Tse-Tung, who admitted that it wasn't) until the 1970s, where nationalism trumped reality, and Chinese society moved right towards racism and xenophobia. Modern Chinese society is extremely racist (you wouldn't know unless you've been there.) If you were to believe the Communist party, parts of 20-something countries would be Chinese. Besides, Tibetans and Chinese Muslims are considered (by Mainland Chinese people) to be foreign and savage. Members of these ethnic groups don't consider themselves Chinese, and the government discriminates them, which is why you hear about monks burning themselves to death. Admittedly, the South China sea islands had never been under Chinese control until the government of the REPUBLIC of China (no "people's" in it, which distinguishes it from Mainland China's de facto government) reached the islands and claimed them for the ROC (NOT the current Chinese government.) Even then, it only controlled 1 island and a reef adjacent to it. Speaking of territory, I have never seen any map in Taiwan or in America showing Taiwan as a part of Communist China. Only a die-hard, Muslim hating, xenophobic Communist (ex: Hsi Chin-Ping, Mainland China's current president and some, but not all members of the Communist party) would believe that. Check your school textbooks and take a picture/upload a map with Taiwan as a part of Mainland China. Furthermore, there are countries who don't recognize the UN on everything that it says (ex: Palestine, which has only existed for 6 years.)
