A fire at an air traffic control centre in Aurora, Illinois has led the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to close both Chicago Midway and O'Hare airports. A statement on the Chicago O'Hare airport website reads:

"Due to an incident at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Center in Aurora, IL, the FAA has imposed ground stops at O'Hare and Midway International Airports. More than 850 flights have been cancelled. Check with your airline for flight status. Follow us on Twitter for updates - @fly2ohare and @fly2midway."

The fire in the centre's telecommunications room was reported at 06:00 local time. The FAA say that control of aircraft in the affected sector of airspace have been handed over to adjacent ATC facilities. The local police and fire departments are now investigating the scene along with the FBI and ATF (Bureau of alcohol, tobacco and firearms.) The FAA stress that, while they are trying to minimise disruption, it is likely that a large number of people will be affected. O'Hare Airport is offering free coffee and water to all passengers.

It would probably be worse in the UK as most commercial air traffic above FL060 in England and Wales is controlled by one ATC centre at Swanwick - if that is evacuated then they'd be massive disruption Undecided
