Absence This Weekend

Hey Guys,
This weekend I won't be able to work on FH thanks to life and my Science Fair project.
Also, on Monday, I will be spending the day with a few professors at University of Pennsylvania so I probably will have limited time as well.

Excellent! What are you doing for your science fair project?

Thanks, everyone.

For my science fair project, I am testing the effects of different compounds on waterproofing wood.

Congratulations! Have fun!

Out of curiosity, what wil you be speaking to them about? Also, your science fair project sounds quite interesting. What compounds have you used thus far?

Speaking of absences, it appears that I can perform at Carnegie Hall twice; once in December and once in April- I have been awarded secon place in a second branch of this competition. I'm not sure if I should perform in December, but in my opinion, God has blessed me-after all, few people have the opportunity to perform in Carnegie Hall, much less twice.

So much to say; I'll have to wait until tomorrow when I have my laptop Wink

Okay, possible long post coming.

So I spent the day with a professor and a few undergrad/grad students. The first thing they explained was their research on (SAT word?) superhydrophobic coatings. These are solvents that apply a thin layer of nanoparticles to a surface practically rendering it 100% waterproof, causing water to bead up and roll off with so little resistance that the water droplets actually bounce off the material. It was really cool to watch.

Then a grad student researching for her Ph.D. thesis (MIT grad) showed me the science behind SmartGlass (no, not GoogleGlass). SmartGlass is glass that can be operated via remote controller to make it transparent or opaque. It's really hard to explain, as you can imagine, but basically an electric charge causes sheets of particles to warp causing the glass to turn dark gray.

Later, I was introduced to liquid crystals, a compound with an undefined state of matter, in between Solids and Liquids. They are what makes most computer displays/monitors work; the electric charge does it's particle alignment thingy on the subpixel level. (each pixel in your screen has 4 subpixels, 1 red, 1 blue, 1 green, 1 white)

Then the professor showed me how the University was using origami/kirigami (kirigami is origami except you can cut the paper) to model how self-building, compact, temporary structures could be created for emergency relief.

And finally, an engineering student showed me how he was using programming and legos to build actuators which he needs for his research, but are not readily available, to get the university to fund his development of the product.

And wow, what a fun and interesting day! Big Grin

Interesting... liquid crystals... truly enthralling.

Speaking of the presentation, do you have any pictures?

Anyways, since the prefix hydro-=water, then I'm guessing that...
Superhydrophobic=coatings repelling water to the degree that droplets roll off the surface of it?
Hydrophobic=failing to mix with/repelling water?

Unfortunately, no pictures Sad

And I just did super-hydro-phobic. Super: cool | Hydro: water | Phob: fear, reluctance[hr]
This image sort-of explains it:
